Service History
The
Adell was a two masted, wooden, schooner built in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was rebuilt in 1862. The schooner served a shipping role and was listed with the Door County Advocate as making trips with cargoes of fish and cedar posts throughout the 1860s.
Final Voyage
While enroute from Two Rivers to Milwaukee, the schooner
Adell encountered a gale between November 6 and 19, 1869. The
Active went ashore one mile south of Bay View Pier, near Milwaukee. The owner Captain Fred Weber was reportedly able to salvage the rigging and spars from the wreckage, but found the equipment stolen the next day. According to the Marine Casualties report of 1869, the vessel was valued at $500. The vessel was broken up by November 26, 1869.
There are conflicting reports about the fate of the
Adell. According to some reports, the
Adell sprung a leak and sank on November 8 in the Sheboygan Harbor as a total loss. One source noted the
Adell as recovered. The vessel's last document was issued in Milwaukee on April 26, 1869.
Today
The wreckage of the
Adell is likely broken up. Field investigation has not been conducted to locate the exact site.
