The wooden two masted schooner was built in Milwaukee by E. Euniac (Euniacke?) in 1853.

October 21, 1855: "On Sunday morning, the schooner J.Steinhart, bound from Green Bay to Chicago with a load of cord wood, became water-logged and capsized about 6 miles north of Milwaukee and 8 miles from shore. She remained on her beam for nearly two hours, when her spars went out of her and she righted. The captain and four hands, who had lashed themselves to the rails and timber head, when she capsized, got aboard again. The cook and mate died of cold and exhaustion, about 11 a.m. Sunday. The captain and crew were taken off the wreck by the Belle City, of Racine, and carried to Chcago, whence they returned to this city by the lakeshore R.R. yesterday noon. The Steihart was owned by capt. Ross and G.P. Pfister, of this city." Milwaukee Sentinel 10/24/1855.
