Service History
The
Transit spent most of her life hauling lumber, shingles and related material between Milwaukee and other ports such as Chicago and Sheboygan.
Final Voyage
"At approximately 9 pm 9/23/1891, the lumber laden schooner
Transit attempted to enter the harbor at Kewaunee. Unknown to her master, the pier at Kewaunee had been lengthened 250 feet during the summer, but the light had not, at the time, been moved to the end of the pier. This lead Capt. Oleson to sail his vessel right into the harbor pier. The schooner began leaking badly, and drifted onto the rocks approximately 1000 feet north of the harbor pier. The
Transit was later towed into the harbor where her cargo of lumber was removed. Between 10/30 and 11/6/1891, the schooner was raised, towed out into the Lake and presumably sunk, most likely off Kewaunee."
