Service History
The schooner
Andromeda was built in 1848 in Ohio. Her hull had received damage while passing through the Welland canal.
Her cargo seemed primarily to be lumber bound for Chicago although she was known to carry flour and salt at times.
The two-masted wooden schooner
Andromeda was built and enrolled at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1848.
Final Voyage
On Saturday evening, at approximately 8 o'clock, the schooner
Andromeda sunk about 25 miles east of Kewaunee. Her sinking was possibly due to damage she received prior to her foundering. After the vessel was discovered to be leaking, the crew found they could not make the pumps work, and the schooner sank almost immediately. The crew took to the small boat and reached Manitowoc on Sunday morning, and the steamer
Arctic took the crew to Sheboygan.
"The loss is a severe one to the Captain (Morgan), as he had only purchased the vessel last spring, and on this trip had invested his season's earnings in salt, and lost everything." MS 7/22/1858 p. 1, c 4
The
Andromeda most likely foundered 40 miles northeast of Manitowoc although one source places her 20 miles from Sheboygan approximately 15 miles from shore.
