The scow
St Ignace was rigged with a hoisting apparatus and she had a cabin.
Final Voyage
"The scow
St. Ignace left grand Haven, MI Thursday night 11/8/1894 with a cargo of brick consigned to C.F. Bertschy of Milwaukee. She was in tow of the tug
E.G. Crosby. W.J. Drumm was captain of the tug, while one sailor, Frank Leland, was alone on board the scow. A storm arose when the
St. Ignace was about 30 miles from Milwaukee, with the winds blowing from the south. Friday morning, a wave tossed the scow sideways, dumping her cargo overboard. The tow line was cut, and all search for Leland by the tug was in vain. The
Crosby then came into Milwaukee. The cargo of brick was valued at $1,500 and was not insured. The scow was valued at $2,500 - also not insured."
Today
