Description
Anderson Dock and Museum is a tribute to the history of Door County and small town life, specifically Ephraim. The Anderson complex is composed of four main buildings. Anderson Barn tells of Ephraim's past through photographs, artwork, artifacts, and stories, as well as changing exhibits. The Svalhus, built around 1890, was used as a cooling and storage house for grain and food. Anderson Dock holds an art museum largely composed of local artists' works. Anderson Store, still set up as if the next customer was just outside, contains a variety of merchandise, tools, and clothing from the past century-and-a-half. Reflecting the maritime heritage of Ephraim, the Barn has the ship's wheel from the Ebenezer, the only schooner built in Ephraim, as well as a model of the S.S. Carolina, one of the many ships that was Ephraim's lifeline bringing food, trade, and settlers. The Store contains pictures of different ships from the late 19th century tied up at the dock, as well as a 'sail sleigh,' which was used to sail over Lake Michigan in winter once it had iced over.
