Service History

The two masted brig Cumberland was built in Cleveland, Ohio. In December, 1856 she was abandoned and later recovered after she was wrecked on Lake Huron near Goderich, Ontario while carrying a cargo of wheat.

Last Document Of Enrollment Surrendered: Chicago: 7/22/59.
Final Voyage

"The Gale of Wednesday Night--Wreck of the Brig Cumberland. The wind shifted to the north sometime during Wednesday night and blew with great violence until morning. On Wednesday afternoon the brig Cumberland and several other vessels came into the straight cut for shelter during the storm. The wind was then blowing from the west and there was but little sea on this side of the lake. Before the wind changed, all the vessels that were moored in the straight cut, with the exception of the Cumberland, had the good sense to come into the river. At about 11 o'clock she was ran into by the schooner Curlew, and had her stern badly stove in. She filled with water immediately, and soon pounded to pieces against the pier. The Cumberland was an old vessel, and with her cargo, will prove a total loss. She had a large load of lumber from Oconto for Chicago, and was owned by J.L. Adams of that city." Milwaukee Sentinel, October 21, 1859, page 3
Today

What remains of the Cumberland now lies in the river near Jones' old ship yard at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
