Last Document of Enrollment Surrendered: GH: 12/29/1888: "Total Loss"
Final Voyage

While attempting to enter Manitowoc harbor on 12/11/1881 for shelter the schooner C.S. Davis "struck the south pier." The Davis was not severely damaged and made fast to the pier while her master went ashore to find a tug. "While he was absent, the mate cast off the lines, set the canvas, and ran her on the beach, "to save her" as he said." (Door County Advocate 12/22/1881). After she was beached, she broke in half, became a total wreck and was stripped and abandoned. The Davis had been en route to Milwaukee with a cargo of slabs.

A portion of her cargo was saved.

Possibly the remains of the C.S. Davis were discovered in the harbor in November of 1908 and removed.
