Final Voyage

"May 24, 1901. -- Schooner H. Rand, laden with slabs, waterlogged, capsized and went to pieces off Manitowoc, Lake Michigan. Capt. Jefferson, his daughter and two sailors drowned." Wrecks On The Great Lakes, Casualty List of 1901.

"There is every reason to believe that the derelict schooner off Milwaukee is the H. Rand of Racine. The crew of four is probably lost>" Port Huron Daily Times May 29, 1901.

"Charles Jefferson of Manistee, Mich., son of Captain Ralph Jefferson, lost on the schooner H. Rand, arrived in the city today. He is a sailor and said that he had visited the wreck of the Rand, which lies on the beach north of South Milwaukee. He gives a new version of how the vessel was lost. He said: "After a thorough investigation of the Rand wreck ... I can unhesitantly state that the Rand was in collision with either a steamer or sail vessel, and that she was struck near the stern, part of the hull and small boat being carried away. I believe that the crew were in the stern at the time, that they rushed forward to get out of the way, and perished. The wreakage bears the appearance of having been cruched by a blow." Milwaukee Sentinel 6/04/1901.

Later, the wreck of the schooner which was lying directly in the path of vessels was towed by the U.S. Life-Saving Service to the beach near Racine and dynamited.
