Service History

The small fishing boat America was a wooden oil screw weighing approximately 13 tons. It was built at Bailey's Harbor, Wisconsin in 1912. The owner of the craft was listed as Robert J. Geitner. Due to its size and the commonality of the name at the time, there is little clear record of the America's traffic. On May 14, 1914, the Door County Advocate reported the ship grounded on the reef outside of Two Harbors, Minnesota.
Final Voyage

The small fish boat America sank on May 5, 1950, in a sudden storm five miles north of Sturgeon Bay. At the time, there was a crew of two aboard and the home port was listed as Milwaukee.
Today

The remains of the America are presumed to be near the Leathem and Smith Stone Quarry in Green Bay. The wreck was described in historical sources, but the current position and condition have not yet been investigated.
