Service History

"The Smith was built in Manitowoc in 1881 and was employed in the lumber carrying trade between Green Bay points and Chicago from that time until now (1893)." Last Document Surrendered Milwaukee 12/31/1893: "Total Loss".
Final Voyage

"Racine, Wis., Nov. 11.-The steamer Arthur Orr collided with the steambarge Thomas H. Smith near here at 2:30 this morning in the fog. The Smith sank at once, but not until the crew was taken off by the Orr. Both vessels were light." "...the Orr hit the Smith on the port side about midships, a square blow, going into the side of the Smith four or five feet..." "At the time of the collision she (the Smith) had the schooner William Aldrich in tow, but that vessel threw off the tow line, and proceeded on her voyage alone, after ascertaining that the crew were all safe."
