Last Document Surrendered Chicago 12/28/1867: "Lost"
Final Voyage
"November 24th. Dragged her anchors in a storm from north-northeast and went ashore on the South Point."
"The position of this vessel is not as favorable as at first reported. She lies upon a rock bottom, decks to in the water, and we have heard fears expressed that her bottom is pretty well used up. The
Tifft and Davidson spent some time on Thursday in an ineffectual effort to pull her off, and the
Leviathan went out to her yesterday, but the heavy seas rendered it impossible to approach close enough..."
"A Total Loss.-We learn from those who have visited the scow
Tempest, ashore on the South Point, that she is badly broken up and will in all probability prove a total loss. Her spars are said to lean in opposite directions, which certainly indicates great demoralization in the hull. Capt. Gonio, of the
Leviathan, considered her case a hopeless one, and therefore made no attempt to pull her off."
