Final Voyage

The schooner H. Rand, loaded with hardwood slabs and bound from Boyne, Mich., to Milwaukee, waterlogged and capsized during a gale while off Racine. The U.S. Lifesaving Service later towed the wreck onto the beach to rid the lake of a menace to shipping. Racine Life Saving Station "The wreck of this schooner was lying directly in the path of vessels, making a dangerous obstruction. Surfmen towed out, ran a line to the wreck, and had the tug tow it to the beach." Last document surrendered Milwaukee, 5/24/1901: "Total Loss."
