Service History

The single masted steam screw Delaware was built in Black River, Ohio (one source says Black River, New York) in 1846 by Thomas H. Cobb and L.D. Burnell. Originally the hull was 145 feet long (canal size), but was cut in half and lengthened by nearly 30 feet to 173.84 feet in 1847.
Final Voyage

November 5,1855. The steam propeller Delaware, from Chicago bound for Buffalo, New York with a full cargo of provisions consisting of green hides, 2,400 barrels of beef, and flour was driven ashore by a gale seven or eight miles south of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Eleven of a crew of eighteen were killed. The Delaware sank in 15 feet of water. The vessel soon went to pieces a total loss.
