Final Voyage

"...on last Friday the scow Rival, Capt. Gary, of Milwaukee, came to Grimm's pier, five miles north of this village, and took on a cargo of 50 cords wood for Jacob Grimm. Friday evening she attempted to leave, there not being much wind, but a heavy swell rolling in. When about 3000 feet northeast from the end of the pier she struck heavily upon a sunken rock which stove in her bottom planking, and she immediately filled and settled firmly upon the rocks. Capt. Gary proceeded to Manitowoc, and the tug G.W. Tift passed north on Monday but returned south the same day. We have not learned the result of her visit, but it is not believed that the Rival can be saved." Kewaunee Enterprise September 15,1869
