The wooden two masted scow schooner
Maria was built in 1866 at Port Huron, Michigan in 1866. Her official registry number was 50612. Note that there was another
Maria with the registry number of 91096. In 1874 the
Maria was valued at $3,000 and rated B2 by the Board of Lake Underwriters.
The
Maria had been repaired in 1874.
Last Document of Enrollment Surrendered: Milwaukee: November 5, 1883: "Total Loss".
Final Voyage
" A vicious tempest with heavy rain was raging the night the schooner
Maria was docked near Tortenson's pier in hedgehog Harbor. She was loaded and ready to depart from Milwaukee when the storm rolled in off the lake. Captain Peter Anderson of Milwaukee tried to secure the vessel by dropping anchor, but it failed to hold. At about 7 pm, the craft hit shore and was lost.."
"Ellison Bay, Wis., Nov.14.- the scow
Maria, which is ashore at Hedgehog Harbor, has about gone to pieces. The heavy wind and sea proving too much for her. She was stripped immediately after going ashore."
