The two masted wooden schooner George Barber was built in Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1857 by George Barber. The vessel was originally valued at $4,400 and rated B1. In 1874 it was again rated B1 but valued at $3,000. The vessel was repaired in 1873.

The schooner George Barber, which had been abandoned after sinking in the Root River at Racine, was subsequently raised by Peter Galloway in March of 1895. Her masts and rigging (and anything else of value) were salvaged. The plan was to tow her into the lake and beach her at Racine College. The last report (3/13/1895) was that beaching her was impossible at the time, due to ice along the shore. Hirthe Ms, however, reports her as cast adrift in the early spring of 1895. Brendon Baillod states that the vessel was "Raised from the bottom, towed out into the lake (Michigan) and abandoned by being cast adrift. She is thought to have foundered shortly after."
