Service History

The steamer was built in 1881 and was engaged in general freighting in the Green Bay area. Prior to 1899 the City Of Stiles was destroyed by fire and sank in the Fox River near the Main Street Bridge in the city of Green Bay. The vessel lay at the bottom of the Fox River until Maloney & Roulette (the owners) raised and rebuilt it in 1899/1900.

Final Voyage

Fox River near De Pere, Wisconsin. During a thunderstorm on August 2, 1901, the steamer City of Stiles, loading bricks at the DePere fairgrounds dock, was struck by lightning and burned to the water's edge at about 3:20 AM. The crew of six was aboard asleep, narrowly escaping using the boat's yawl which then capsized, but they were then rescued. The Green Bay Advocate of August 9, 1901, reported the vessel as a total wreck, as the load of bricks were so heavy they had flattened out what was left of the burned hull.
Today

"A large obstruction is left in the approximate area where she (City Of Stiles) would have been moored. The Stiles may have been in whole or in part salvaged, and that obstruction could be a natural shoal, or perhaps it is part of the ship or its cargo." Wild Gales and Tattered Sails.
