Service History

The Green Bay sloop site "represents a rare example of a once common vessel type on the Great Lakes, the small working boat. There is a virtual absence of documentation of small craft on the Great Lakes, both for commercial and pleasure purposes, making identification of small Great Lakes craft a particularly difficult task. What little is known about Great Lakes small craft primarily centers around the Mackinaw boat, a small fishing vessel that originated in the Straits of Mackinaw area but soon became widespread throughout the upper Great lakes along with its relative, the Huron Boat."

The Green Bay Sloop is a rare example of a lightly-built vernacular vessel type that was likely used for commercial as well as pleasure purposes. Her hull remains significantly intact. No historical record of this vessel type exists today, making this vessel a rare especially significant example.
