Final Voyage

"J.A.Travis stranded on a reef one mile above North Bay. The crew was trapped by the turbulent sea which was slowly smashing their wooden refuge to bits. Meanwhile in Sturgeon Bay, the Lifesavers had just returned from an all night rescue mission at Algoma when the Steamer Menomonee brought them word of the plight of the Travis. Without rest, the surfmen attained a tug (J. Everson) and headed north through the ice storm. At 3 am, they reached the schooner just in time to save the near frozen crew. Little could be done to save the vessel, so the lifesavers headed home..." Last Document surrendered Milwaukee 12/05/1893; "Total Loss"
