Final Voyage

"Harry Johnson, Unrigged Barge, Stranded October 18,1898. Having abandoned the Annie Dall at Jacksonport, the tug Wright was too low on coal to fight her way through a southern gale to Sturgeon Bay. The tug, with the Johnson in tow, ran before the storm in hopes of finding refuge on the other side of the Door Peninsula. When abreast of Spider Island, the Johnson broke loose with two Jacksonport men aboard. The Wright sought safety of Hedgehog harbor. The next morning the tug, with the assistance of the Plum Island lifesavers, found the Johnson washed ashore and broken up in the Rock Island Passage. The barge was valued at $2,000 and was uninsured. No vessel by the name of Harry Johnson is listed in the government list..." Wild Tales and Tattered Sails, Paul J. Creviere, Jr.
