Final Voyage

"Vessel probably lost.-Apprehensions were felt for the safety of the schooner Emily, belonging to this port (Milwaukee), which sailed three weeks ago (April 6, 1857) for Sand Bay (Door County, Wisconsin) and has not been heard of since. It is feared that she foundered in the late severe gale. The Emily was a fine staunch craft, valued at about $3,000. She was insured in the merchants' Insurance Co. for $1,300. Capt. Jacobsen, who sailed her, and N. Thompson, of this city, were the owners. The captain's wife was aboard, and there was a crew of four men, one named Lewis Andersen of this city, another called Henry, from Manitowoc, and two others unknown." Milwaukee Sentinel 4/28/1857
Gales had swept Lake Michigan shortly after Emily departed Milwaukee and it was thought that the vessel had foundered in the storm. All hands were presumed lost.
