Final Voyage

"When the storm sprang up last Saturday the schooner E.G. Grey was lying at Casco Pier, having just loaded with wood for L. Colby. She attempted to leave the pier, and succeeded, but could not keep clear of the shore. She struck a sunken rock about three fourths of a mile from the pier, which stove a hole in her bottom, and she filled at once. The crew were taken off in small boats in the afternoon, but not without difficulty, and there were some narrow escapes. The Grey was owned in Chicago and we understand, is a total loss. The cargo belonging to Mr. Colby, consisted of about 100 cords of wood." Door County Advocate 5/13/1875

"Casco Pier
A discontinued postoffice in Pierce township, Kewannee county, on the shore of Lake Michigan, 3 1/2 miles south of Ahnapee. Mail to Ahnapee." Polk's Wisconsin State Gazetteer and Business Directory Volume 3 p.118.
